Among the questions I explored were: What is the purpose of government? What role does reason play in governance and leadership? Which styles of leadership are most conducive to effective government? I studied from works by a number of philosophers, including Socrates, Niccolo Machiavelli and Confucius.
  • POLI 260: Comparative Politics: This course was an introduction to one of the main sub-fields within political science, known as comparative politics. I first studied points of comparison between political state types, such as democratization, political economy, post-communism, terrorism and political violence, etc. I then studied the unique facets of several contemporary states including the United Kingdom, India, China, and Mexico.

Throughout the semester, we studied various aspects of both domestic and international poverty through the lens of public policy. We were required to write research briefs on various aspects and social issues affecting poverty, as well as brief essays both in support of and against efforts to reduce poverty through public policy. It allowed me to acquire a more in-depth understanding of the complexities and difficulties in creating and implementing effective public policy. I also came to better appreciate the role that public policy has upon the socioeconomic and political environment within out country and around the world.

The course has helped me in my ongoing development as an academic writer and allowed me to understand my service-learning experience through the Refugee Youth Project from a broader perspective. At the end of the course, for example, I wrote a research paper on the role of historical actions and public policy by the government of Thailand on the ongoing challenges and struggles experienced by its Burmese refugee population. The paper also inquired into possible opportunities for these Burmese refugee communities in Thailand  to improve their legal/socioeconomic/political status by influencing policy on a local/regional scale.
